GCAP Fighter Takes Centre Stage at Farnborough Air Show 2024: Is NGAD lagging?
GCAP Fighter Jet initiative has seen profound emphasis & interest at Farnborough Air Show 2024 in United Kingdom. Farnborough Air show is held biennially in the United Kingdom, a prestigious event that brings together aviation enthusiasts, industry leaders, and defense experts from around the world and this time, GCAP Fighter information were in limelight.
What is GCAP Fighter?
GCAP (Global Combat Air Partnership) is a collaborative initiative aimed at developing next-generation combat aircraft. It involves partnerships between leading aerospace companies, defense agencies, and research institutions. The aim is to create cutting-edge fighter jets that can address evolving threats and maintain air superiority.
It is a collaborative effort from 3 countries: The United Kingdom, Japan and Italy. The ambitious program involves reputed industry partners, BAE Systems from the UK, Leonardo (Italy) and MHI from Japan.

As per reports, the GCAP Fighter Initiative is spearheading at speed, so far as concept & assessment in 2025 is concerned. Based on comments at Farnborough Air Show by the industry leaders of GCAP Fighter Program, the initiative looks convincing & is not suffering from any delays or policy confusions, unlike NGAD in USA, is not guaranteed due to dilemma in fund allocation issues.
To deliver GCAP Fighter in 2035, with all the planned features like advanced sensors, low observable, superior avionics, is not a small task. It will be tedious 10 years for the BAE-Leonardo-Mitsubishi Coalition. As per reports, the program has strong possibilities of including Sweden & Germany as well into the coalition.
The discussion at Farnborough airshow 2024 between Japan, Italy & UK was focused on consortium formalities, integration of technologies vital to stealth capabilities, situational awareness of the jet, human-machine teaming and export potential of the program.
The prime objective of GCAP Fighter initiative aims to achieve freedom of action and improvisation, unlike the F-35 Acquisition Constraints, especially laxity in annexing new weaponry to F-35.
Japan Government has been working continuously on revising their stricter & restricted defense export laws, to ease the scope of export of GCAP Fighter to countries who have signed defense equipment & technology transfer deals with Japan, as per reports.
It is also important to note that the three countries have formed GIGO (GCAP International Government Organization), headquartered in UK, to manage the progress of the GCAP design, contracts, technology integration, production, test and other trade prospects related to the advanced sixth-generation fighter system. This proves the determination of the tri-lateral coalition to achieve 6th generation advanced system, that will augur well for both Japan, England, Italy & Whole Europe.
While NGAD program of USAF is drowned with ambiguities and lack of fund, GCAP fighter raises potential to serve as a strong candidate as the first sixth-generation fighter jet to fly in Japan & European Skies and further by 2035. The GCAP Fighter jet will also bolster the air strength of NATO, along with NGAD & F-35 Upgrades. The collaborative efforts of the GCAP Fighter consortium promise a new era of combat capabilities, ensuring that Japan, England, Italy, Other Parts of Europe & their allies remain safe and secure.
