Loyal Wingman Drone for F5 Rafale Jets- France to Pioneer Man-Machine Mission Integration, A New Approach in Europe?

Loyal Wingman Drone technology is set to transform France’s aerial combat capabilities as the nation embarks on developing an advanced drone to support its upcoming upgraded Rafale fighter jets. Led by Dassault aviation, this innovative drone will enhance mission effectiveness through autonomous operations, allowing it to perform critical tasks like intelligence gathering & electronic warfare.

Expected to be fully operational by 2033, the initiative underscores France’s commitment to integrating manned and machine systems in the battle strategy, addressing evolving demands of modern warfare and ruling out delays in deciding a single platform to solve many challenges.

This marks a major milestone in France’s military modernization, addressing delays in the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program. The unmanned combat & loyal wingman drone for upgraded F5 Standard Rafale Jets, will use the advancements made by Dassault Aviation with its nEUROn unmanned demonstrator, the company has announced.

The drone completed its first flight in December 2012 and released a weapon from its internal bay in September 2015, successfully. The program involves several members: Saab for the design of the main fuselage, avionics and fuel system, as well as Airbus for expertise on the wings.

Dassault Aviation has stated that the wingman drone will incorporate stealth technology, operate autonomously with a man-in-the-loop control system, and possess the capacity to transport internal payloads. The stealthy & loyal wingman drone will be operated directly from the Rafale cockpit. Additionally, the loyal wingman drone is engineered to adjust to future emerging threats.
