Pakistan Politics & Election Result 2024: A Fragile Situation
On Sunday, the Election Commission of Pakistan disclosed the inconclusive results of the 2024 general elections, underscoring a divided National Assembly where no single party clinched a clear majority. Independent candidates, supported by Imran Khan, secured 101 seats, while the Muslim League-N and People’s Party garnered 75 and 54 seats, respectively.
The outcome faced immediate challenge from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, headed by Imran Khan, who demanded the resignation of the chief election commissioner. PTI spokesperson Rauf Hassan condemned the Election Commission, accusing it of facilitating “a blatant theft of democracy.”
At least two individuals were reportedly killed, and 11 others were injured as PTI supporters clashed with police during a protest in the Shangla district of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The demonstration was against alleged tampering of election results.
The United States, as conveyed by State Department spokesman Mathew Miller, strongly denounced the electoral violence and the curtailment of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Likewise, the European Union, represented by foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, expressed dismay over reports of significant interference in the electoral process, including the arrests of political activists. Additionally, the United Kingdom, represented by Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron, voiced apprehensions regarding the fairness and inclusivity of the elections.
Police have implemented constraints on “unlawful assemblies” following calls from Imran Khan’s PTI and other parties to rally against purported rigging in elections. PTI has additionally urged its supporters in the United Kingdom and the United States to protest against the alleged vote rigging in the elections.
The evolving situation promises an intriguing conclusion, particularly given Pakistan’s delicate democratic landscape. It remains captivating to observe how the Pakistan Army navigates this scenario, given the widely acknowledged perception that it wields significant influence over the nation’s affairs.
