South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Impeached, Resists Arrest: 5 Months or Less Until Constitutional Court Ruling

The political Weather in South Korea remains unpredictable as South Korea awaits the Constitutional Court’s ruling on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol. President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached after a controversial episode marked by his brief imposition of martial law on December 3. This move attracted widespread criticism and accusations of insurrection. Currently, Yoon is under criminal investigation and has taken refuge in his hilltop residence in Seoul, surrounded by his loyal security guards.

The situation escalated badly when law enforcement attempted to arrest Yoon Suk Yeol, resulting in a six-hour standoff that was broadcast live on national television. As the Constitutional Court deliberates on whether to permanently remove Yoon from presidential office, the political situation is shifting. Yoon’s supporters have rallied around him, with many gathering near his residence amid a harsh winter weather. This show of support has also encouraged the ruling People Power Party (PPP), which has expected a rise in approval ratings.

Political analysts suggest that the failed arrest attempt has energized conservative factions, uniting them against the main opposition Democratic Party and its leader, Lee Jae-myung. The Democratic Party, which holds a parliamentary majority, played a key role in the impeachment proceedings.

Yoon Suk Yeol has a maximum of five months or less, depending on when the court releases its judgement, which is expected sooner than 5 months.
