Taiwan has detected 47 Chinese military aircraft and 12 warships near the island within a 24-hour period. This is the highest number of Chinese military aircraft spotted in a single day since Beijing launched large-scale war games two months ago. The Taiwanese defense ministry informed that its defense forces are on high alert following the escalated Chinese military activity which includes People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China reserving airspace off China’s East Coast.
China’s actions are probably part of a strategic lead-up to a third “Joint Sword” military exercise. However, Unlike the exercises in May and October, where detailed information about the affected areas was provided, Beijing has not yet formally announced any upcoming military drills. Experts view this escalation as a protest to visit by Taiwan President to Hawaii Island in the U.S., accompanied by military sales by the U.S.
Chinese spokeswoman Mao Ning emphasized the importance of safeguarding China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, without addressing whether it was influenced by the Taiwanese President’s U.S. visit or recent U.S. military aid to Taiwan.
“Taiwan is an integral part of China’s territory. The Taiwan issue is China’s internal affair. China will firmly safeguard its national sovereignty and territory.”
Mao Ning, Spokeswoman, China
“Any unilateral provocations could undermine Indo-Pacific peace and stability. We will address all gray zone incursions and ensure our national security,”

Historical Context and Current Tensions
The tension between China and Taiwan has been a longstanding issue, with both sides having different views on Taiwan’s status. Taiwan regards itself as a sovereign nation with its own government, military, and currency. However, Beijing insists that the island is part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to bring it under its control.
The recent growth in military activity comes amid intense speculation about the possibility of China launching military exercises in response to Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s visits to the United States last week. These visits have been perceived by China as a move to strengthen Taiwan’s international ties and garner support from the global community.
Taiwan’s defense forces remain on high alert, ready to respond to any potential threats. The island’s government continues to seek support from the global community and strengthen its defense partnerships to ensure its sovereignty and security. As the situation unfolds, the world watches closely, hoping for a peaceful and stable future for Taiwan and the region.
