What is Tejas LCA Mark 1A?
The Tejas Mark 1A, a refined iteration of the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), has been developed by India’s Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This variant integrates 40 upgrades and enhancements compared to its predecessors.
The enhancements, which include advanced avionics, an upgraded arsenal, and improved reliability and maintenance, will elevate squadron capabilities to a heightened level of lethality.
First Flight of LCA Tejas Mark 1A
HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) Conducted First Flight of Mark 1A Variant On 28th March 2024 at Bangalore. As per sources, the aircraft was airborne for 15 minutes during test flight.

- ASRAAM (Advanced Short-Range Air to Air Missiles- R73, Python CCM)
- MRAAM (Medium Range Air to Air Missiles- Derby BVR, ASTRA BVR, R-77)
- Anti-Ship Missiles- Kh-35, Kh-31, Brahmos light
- Laser guided bombs (KAB-1500L, GBU-16 Paveway II)
- Conventional Bombs & Drop Tanks
- Can Carry Brahmos Supersonic Cruise Missiles
- GSH Auto Cannon

Strengths:
- Impressive instantaneous turn rate of 30 degrees/second and angle of attack of 24 degrees. Rated for +9G/-3.5G.
- It is the smallest fighter of its class giving it a low visual profile and a low RCS.
- The airframe is made of composite materials making it extremely durable and rugged.
- Tejas can be deployed from short runways making it ideal for deployment in treacherous terrains and desert regions.
- The quadruplex fly-by-wire system and FADEC engine controls make it a very safe fighter with excellent controls.
- High endurance aircraft. Can toil like crazy. It has demonstrated it during Gagan Shakti exercise where it flew 6 sorties/day for a single platform in war like conditions.
Indian Air Force has ordered 123 Mark 1A Jets & Plans to order additional 97 Jets.
The Sale of Tejas jets to other countries is still an exploration stage, wherein a few countries have shown their interest as well & this aspect has to compete with best players worldwide. Mark-1A Will replace the ageing Russian MIG-21 & MIG-27.
Government of India also has shown confidence in the Tejas Project and cleared the Mark-2 Project as well, which is going to have initially GE-F 414 engine and to be followed by an Indigenous engine, with modern features on & above Mark 1A.
Mark-2 Will replace the MIRAGE-2000, Jaguars & MIG-29.
Till this indigenous push gets flying to introduce full scale Tejas squadrons and first batch of AMCA Jets, India will have to continue with newly procured French RAFALE, Powerful Sukhoi-30 MKI, Jaguar, MIRAGE & MIG-29s assisted by Tejas Mark1 as mainstay of Indian defense of their Skies.
