Trident Missile Misfires 2nd time in Atlantic Ocean due to anomaly during test: UK
Trident II D5 Missile has misfired due to “an anomaly” while being test-launched onboard nuclear powered HMS Vanguard. The missile failed to launch as desired & fell into the Atlantic Ocean immediately after it was test-fired.
The event has been confirmed by British Defence Secretary Mr. Grant Shapps.
Trident II D5 Missiles are also used by US Navy & has a range of 4000 Nautical miles.
UK has not revealed the exact reason of launch failure & various speculations are being floated.
“There are no implications for the reliability of the wider Trident missile systems and stockpiles.”- Grant Shapps in UK Parliament
The above statement suggests the failure may be attributable to some technical issues within the submarine itself & probably event specific.
He further added that “The government has absolute confidence that the UK’s deterrent remains effective, dependable, and formidable, That is why we are continuing to invest in the next generation of Dreadnought Class ballistic missile submarines, in extending the life of the Trident missile and replacing the warhead, to keep us safe for decades to come.”
