Volodymyr Zelenskyy Signs Security Agreements with France and Germany for 10 Years: A Long term Game Changer?

Volodymyr Zelensky Signed 02 Security Guarantees with Germany & France

Volodomyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, has signed two historical security agreements with Germany & France respectively.

Agreement with Germany:

The agreement inked with Germany is set to last for a decade, during which Germany will provide ongoing military support to Ukraine’s defense efforts. The terms of the agreement pave the way for the provision of modern defense equipment and continuous security aid. During Zelensky’s visit to Berlin, he met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who announced a military aid package worth $1.2 billion for Ukraine. This package includes 36 howitzers, 120,000 artillery rounds, and 2 extra air defense systems.

“Ukraine has never yet had more valuable and stronger documents,” Zelenskyy stated.

Agreement with France:

Following the mutual signing of a security agreement with Germany, Volodymyr Zelenskyy proceeded to sign a bilateral security agreement with France, also with a duration of 10 years. French President Emmanuel Macron warmly received Zelenskyy at the presidential palace in Paris. This agreement secures the largest-ever aid package of $3.2 billion to Ukraine.

“The outcome of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine will be decisive for our interests, our values, our security and our model of society,” Macron underscored.

Macron characterised these bilateral security agreements as expressions of Europe’s solidarity and support for Ukraine. These agreements are aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities to shield itself against the ongoing Russian aggression since 2022. Notably, Zelensky had recently signed a comparable security pact with the UK. This move could be interpreted as an effort by Ukraine and Europe to diversify their alliances and reduce reliance on the United States. However, it’s worth noting that Zelensky maintains his trust and confidence in the United States.

He said, “I expect that in all of this a pragmatic American approach to us, protecting the security of the world, will be found.”

Currently, Russia is making headlines due to its suppression of activists and crackdown on the antiwar movement. The recent death of Alexei Navalny, a vocal critic of Putin, under mysterious circumstances in a Russian prison has sparked widespread concern. Yulia Navalnaya, Alexei’s wife, declared during a Munich security meeting that Putin and his associates will be held accountable for her husband’s demise, expressing confidence that justice will ultimately prevail.
